Despite its xerox-quality pages, this fifties book differs from the other books in its series. The book shows how pop charts during the fifties evolved in its format from year to year. It’s also great how each chart page was duplicated exactly the way it first appeared in Billboard original issue. It is also something to enjoy, seeing each page with ads and promos in the very old-fashioned graphics.

Joel Whitburn has been America’s chart chronicler for thirty years now-The new edition of “Pop Annual” is great-Not only does it list every single that charted in Billboard magazine’s “Hot 100″ from 1955-1999,but Whitburn has a year by year Time Capsule, which gives the reader an overview of world & national events, sports,& entertainment-If you’re a radio personality or just a music geek, like myself, this book deserves a worthy place in your bookcase.
If You’re a fan of charted singles music and a fan of visuals this ones for You.It features a musical pop culture’s who’s who in the Rock Era.It does so by Featuring singles slip covers art to each of the 1000 most successful chart entries beginning in 1955.
Excellent compilation for music lovers. The hits are listed by album cover which really brings back memories of the wonderful music we love to play over and over again. I could argue with the positioning of certain songs but not too much since I am biased towards older hits and the ‘rap’ type music doesn’t turn my crank much. For a younger generation I suppose this is O.K. Love this book and for any music collector this is a great encyclopedia of music.
This book is fun to look through, especially to see the old record covers. I do think the criterion used (weeks at #1 in the Top 40) for ranking the top 1000 is a bit flawed. This depends a lot on the competition at the time. Probably total sales or radio plays would be a better indication. But there will always be debate on which are the best songs over a 50-year period.
The songs are not in chronological order but arranged in a more than arguable chart possiton which make it mixed and messy. There are no text or comments and also some of the pictures don’t correspond to the original realeases. Consider other books from billboard before buying this one!
This book covers artists and their albums in much the same way as Mr. Whitburn’s Top Pop books, only this goes all the way down to the top 200 each week. You should find whatever you’re looking for except for the inclusion of record values. There is information on that for each album, but books which cater specifically to collectability and value do a much better job, so ignore that small portion.
I saw this book at the library and wanted one. I was disappointed to see it is no longer in print!
What a wonderful book packed with loads of info! Even though it only goes to 1995, that is ok. Just no current Rap Music ( ) to view – which is fine with me!
I go for the 60s/70s/80s stuff anyway.
Joel Whitburn’s newest edition of Top Pop Albums details every album which entered Billboard’s Top 200 chart between January 1955 and September 1996. What Whitburn serves up, however, is no mere list of album titles and chart positions. Rather, this massive (1,056 page) tome contains data regarding the label and catalog number of each album, the date on which it entered the chart, and the number of weeks which it remained on the chart.
As an added bonus, Whitburn includes valuable biographical information on most, though regrettably not all, of the artists. In fact, Top Pop Albums provides biographical data on some rather obscure artists which is otherwise difficult to obtain. Unfortunately, the scope of the work is such that the bio data does not include band members whose tenure did not include making the Top 200. On the plus side (and a big plus it is), the work includes a listing of every track which appeared on every album which charted, with clear indication as to which album the track appeared.
Whitburn’s Record Research organization has for many years been the most reliable source of information regarding the Billboard charts for music fans and professionals alike, and Top Pop Albums 1955-1996 is certainly a worthy member of their family of publications. Whitburn and his fellow researchers continue to improve their works with each successive edition. Though rather expensive, Top Pop Albums 1955-1996 is the final word on artists who have reached Billboards Top 200 charts.
These Billboard chart books are a fun read for pop music fans who are too young to recall the years in question firsthand. Of particular interest to me are the charts from the ’50s and early ’60s. It’s amazing how quickly some records rise to the top of the charts, and how some of them drop like a rock after their time has passed. These books are pricey, and are probably of interest mainly to those who are into statistics, but it’s nice to be able to get a look at the musical lay of the land at specific points in time. These books may not be for everybody, for several reasons, but I like them.
I bought this book for my husband as a birthday gift. He is a music lover and he completely adored the book! I would recommend it to any music trivia whiz or anyone who loves to keep up with hits! It’s a fabulous reference and a great source of information.
An absolute necessity for anyone who collects music or is interested in the history of Rock/Pop music in the United States. A must have book that will Never be on the shelf but always close by for reference.
It’s a great book for any music fan of the last fifty or more years. It lists all the artists, song titles and chart information for every year. Even a small bio of each artist. It is the bible of popular music. All of Joel Whitburn’s books are excellent.
Just overflowing with fabulous info. I only wish there was a paperback version available from Amazon. I’m sure there’s one somewhere, since this book was published in ’03 and there were always paperback versions of older Whitburn books. It would’ve been less expensive (and lighter!).
